I can't believe its already been a week since returning from our 7th annual, and 8th week long retreat in Mexico. Wether you know me well or not so well, you probably know that I'm not one to exaggerate. But I must say, this past retreat was absolutely wonderful and so, so special. Villa Ananda, Rasa Yoga Center, my dear friend and retreat coordinator Julie Freed, and the participants on the retreat make it what it is. Each year I feel like we are able to make it better, are more connected and bring the nourishing qualities together to give people what they need. Although living in the moment and day by day is the goal, I'm already looking forward to next February (2017) and another retreat together! If you're interested in being notified as to when the next February retreat is and how to sign up, please e-mail me at jamie@firstrayyoga.com and I'll get you on my e-mail list to get you the details. In the mean time, please visit my website at www.jamieelmer.com to look at my schedule and to see when I'll be in your area next. In addition, I'll be leading a mini retreat in Ashland, OR in October of this year. Please visit this link for the details and to register:

In 2001 I took my first yoga teacher training with my first teacher, Max Strom. Soon after, he and a few other prominent teachers opened Sacred Movement, Center for Yoga and Healing in Venice, CA. Max had me start teaching at Sacred Movement, and the rest is history. I had no idea how lucky I was to begin teaching at this studio, and also to have the opportunity to practice with so many wonderful teachers there. We had our own little mecca of bliss. Time passed. I taught more, took more teacher trainings and eventually, Sacred Movement became Exhale, Max moved away and I was teaching nine classes a week on the schedule. I was happy and grateful, but its hindsight that makes you realize how lucky you were.

In 2008 I moved out of L.A and began traveling to teach, around the country and now beyond. What I experienced and learned at Exhale/Sacred Movement as a teacher and as a student I can't explain in words. My time there, that time in my life was so special, so important and so valuable. I am forever grateful for ALL who made it was it was then, and what it has been in recent years. The space has been an incredible place for people to breathe, move, learn, grow, heal and expand. As we all know, when something comes to an end, more opportunity will come from that closure.

If you're reading this and you spent time at Exhale, Venice, thank you for contributing to the place, the space and the community. I hope to see you down the road wherever that may be!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09972654483990411226noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2698527572938865853.post-76491985801909877722015-11-13T21:35:00.001-08:002015-11-13T21:37:25.104-08:00Home BaseAfter being out of the country nearly a month (with one night spent flying through L.A trying to avoid hurricane Patricia), I'm happy to be home in CO. Having a home base is important in order to experience the freedom of exploration. I'm especially grateful tonight to have an area of this world that feels like home, as I watch and listen to events over seas. My thoughts and heart are with you in Paris tonight. Whomever reads this, I hope you, your friends and family are safe.
Los Angeles was about the last place in the world I ever thought I would live. And, I ended up spending my 20's here. Actually a full ten years, to the day. I haven't lived in L.A for about seven years now, but still come back with regularity to teach. The bonus is I also get to see some of my best friends in the world when I visit!

This weekend, I've been teaching the anatomy and posture section of Santa Monica Yoga's 200 hour teacher training. What a pleasure its been to work with nice, open minded and committed students! Thanks for having me.

Next weekend I'll be teaching anatomy and healing injuries at Rasa Yoga Center in Southern Oregon as part of their 200 hour Teacher Training. I've been teaching with Rasa for over five years now, and always look forward to teaching there and working with their community. I'm grateful for the opportunity to work with such nice people in different parts of the country!
Along with travel, my Skype privates are up and running and have been so much fun! If interested in one on one instruction, please e-mail me at jamie@jamieelmer.com
Its beautiful here in Steamboat Springs, CO on this Monday morning. After two straight weeks of rain, the river is flowing, the mountains are green and we can be outside again and take advantage of this gorgeous area.

Its been a while since I posted a blog here on my home page. Since I last wrote I've visited the DC area where I taught my Level 1 PhysioSTRIDE™ training, we've moved and been to and from Boulder and Denver a couple of times. While traveling, the piece that struck me most was the fact that wherever we go these days, folks are on their smart phones non stop. In airports, walking and looking down. In cars, driving and looking down. Crossing streets and on sidewalks looking down. And, in restaurants, sitting at a table with one, two or three other people and looking down at their phone, or periodically checking it since they have it out and on the table. This has become a broken record topic of our time, but are we really more connected with all of our technology, or less? In some ways, of course we're more connected when it comes to the amount of communication is at our fingertips. But, I feel that there is a time and a place to use this technology. While crossing the street is not one of those times. While out at dinner is not one of those times. While in a public class, like a yoga class, is not one of those times. There is a time and a place for most things. Smart phones seem to have infiltrated our every moment and look to me like they've become the exception. Let's change that as things progress even further down the technology trail. We need to know when to put it away. If you're walking in a busy airport terminal, please look up so you don't bump in to me. If you're crossing the street, please look up so you're not hit by a car. And if we're out at a meal or having coffee together, please look up and put it away so that we can connect face to face.

Besides the obvious factor of being "present" with who you're with or your surroundings, and not drowning in i phone land, I'm very curious about the long term postural effects this will have on us. The inevitable rounded shoulders, forward head and overly flexed neck and upper back. And then, people wonder why they're shoulders, neck and upper back are sore. Humans have developed in to beings that are meant to be upright and have our eyes forward, not down at a screen. I feel like its inevitable that most people will be using technology more and more. I also hope that in this evolutionary process we take the time to do physical activities that counter balance "technology posture". Get outside to stretch your eyes. Walk backwards after sitting at a desk or in a chair (my personal favorite "go to" remedy for many things), or doing chest, shoulder and neck stretches.

I'm certainly not anti technology. In fact, we ordered new phones yesterday since our's are on their last leg. Its going to cost us our first born for the phones, but we ordered them non the less. Technology is fun and certainly useful. We just need to make sure that for each moment we're looking down at our phones, or at our computers, we ideally take an equal amount of time putting our phone down to look out, look up, open our chest and stretch our eyes. Especially while crossing the street.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09972654483990411226noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2698527572938865853.post-55153303615911841252015-05-04T20:35:00.001-07:002015-05-04T20:39:37.829-07:00Rifle, Palisade, Fruita, Montrose, Ridgway, Telluride, Ouray, Silverton and Durango....oh, and teaching news!

This means, the mountain is closed (no skiing or snow boarding), and its still cold and wet enough outside that we can't be out on hiking or biking trails. What are people to do? As I experienced this morning, they come to yoga! I taught my Yoga and Pilates conditioning class this morning at Storm Peak Brewery - a class I've been teaching as often as possible since living in Steamboat. $10.00 includes class AND a beer. Its a fun thing that brings people together when they're not out on the trails. The Brewery and I are in the process of making our summer schedule for these classes. I'll announce them soon and they'll be on my calendar page of this site.
Last weekend I was in Southern Oregon teaching part of a Yoga Teacher Training at Rasa Yoga Center. Thanks for having me! We had a fun time in the teacher training and in the public classes. Looking forward to seeing you all in the Fall. Dates are TBA. Here are a few pics from classes at Rasa.
Being able to walk outside without thinking about slipping on ice or slogging through slush has been great. I've even brought my bike out already. I hope you've been able to get outside and enjoy the warmer temps!

This coming week I'm looking forward to traveling to Southern Oregon for my annual teaching trip at Rasa Yoga Center - I'll be teaching my Applied Anatomy, Posture and Alignment course along with my PhysioSTRIDE™ public workshop. If you're in the area and would like more information on these courses and how to register, visit Rasa's site.

Keep moving, breathing and enjoying the outdoors when you can. Just make sure to wear your sunscreen!

Nearly 6 years ago, my friend Mariane called me and asked if I wanted to teach a yoga retreat in Mexico. Mariane owns Rasa Yoga Center (in southern Oregon) and she wanted to hold a retreat at Villa Ananda, an Ayurvedic spa outside of Puerta Vallarta. I said yes, and the rest is history. I’m currently on the plane back from our 5th annual retreat at Villa Ananda and we’re already discussing the dates for 2016.

This retreat is a week that I look forward to every year. Some participants we’ve had on the retreat for all 5 years. Some participants are new each year. Each year the people and diversity of the participants makes it special and different. I hope to make it a tradition that continues for a long, long time to come.

This retreat has so much to do with the people - the kitchen staff, the staff that keep up the grounds, the ayurvedic therapists and the retreaters are so special each year. Some retreaters have never met me before or been out of the country and take a chance, trust their friend, mom, or wife that they’ll have a good experience. Some retreaters I’ve known and practiced with for years and feel like family. At the end of the day, its about coming together, getting to know each other and trying something new in a special, cared for environment.

Actually, I know I'm good at these two things. Each day I take time to recognize all that I'm grateful for, appreciate all that I have, small and large. Lately, its come to my attention that in addition to living in the moment and staying grateful, I also need to look at the bigger picture. The 5, 10 and 15 year plan and prepare accordingly. I'm not very good at this part of life. Recently someone gave me the assignment of listing, in different life categories, what I want. Not based on what I think I deserve, what I think someone else might want for me, or what makes sense financially. Instead, simply listing, what I want. What I want my life to look like in 6 months, 1 year, 3 years, etc. I get a bit stumped. Not because I don't know, but because I'm so used to thinking of what will make others happy before myself. Stumped because I automatically feel selfish and materialistic when I think of what I want. I'm trying to change this way of thinking. I'm realizing that the less I think about the future, the less of a positive impact I'll have in the future. I'm a very giving and caring person. To give and care for myself and others more, I need to not only be grateful for what I have, but also be setting myself up to give more long term.

These changes aren't going to happen over night in my way of thinking, but I'll be working on it. As I plan ahead, I'll continue to live in the moment and be grateful for all that I have. What a balance this life is!

One of the many things I'm grateful for today is the fact that I'll be teaching a couple of fun events this coming weekend in Steamboat Springs, CO, and next week headed to L.A to teach for two days on my way to Mexico to teach two week long retreats back to back. Yes, I know, life is good.
I’m on my way back to Steamboat Springs after teaching in Greenville, SC this past weekend. It was a REALLY nice weekend. I always enjoy seeing Liz and Brian (we took our first T.T together in 2001 with one of our teacher’s, Max Strom), and of course enjoy the students. A few people told me that they had been following our travels and said they always enjoyed reading about our time and adventures on the boat. One man said, “You need to get back to doing more adventures!” Well, I don’t think that living on a boat is in our near future again, but I’ll try to come up with a good ski story or maybe next month my retreat in Mexico will spontaneously become more entertaining to read about! I’ll try.

In not so adventurous news, an article came out today in Steamboat Today about my Yoga and Pilates conditioning classes at Storm Peak Brewery. Here is the link: http://www.steamboattoday.com/news/2015/jan/11/instructor-leads-yoga-and-beer-classes-storm-peak/

Next class is this coming Saturday, January 17th. Later that afternoon on the 17th I’m teaching a continued education workshop for teachers and teachers in training at Yoga Center of Steamboat - Verbal Cues and Hands on Assists. (visit Yoga Center of Steamboat’s site to register)

January 23rd - 28th - teaching my Applied Anatomy for Yoga course as part of Max Strom’s 200 hour T.T in Vienna, VA at East Meets West Center - you do not need to be in Max’s training to attend this course. Please visit East Meets West’s site to register.

January 24th - teaching my PhysioSTRIDE public workshop in Vienna, VA at East Meets West Center. Please visit East Meets West’s site to register.

*While in VA I’m available for one on one instruction. Its a great time to get individual attention and to focus on what you need. For example, this past weekend in Greenville people who saw me for privates needed help with SI joint pain, hip pain, a labrum tear, and recent ankle surgery. If you’re wondering if one on one instruction would be right for you, please e-mail me at jamie@jamieelmer.com.

Thanks for reading this unadventurous e-mail. You never know what will be around the corner, though……..

Its been a busy start to the year here in Steamboat Springs, but I'm grateful for that. The last few years we've traveled and moved around so much. It feels great to be in one place, settling in and getting to know nice people. (the people here in Steamboat continue to surprise me by how nice they are!!!!)

Each time around this year I feel the pressure to make a big New Years resolution or life change. Instead of putting that pressure on myself, I've simply thought about precisely, what I'd like to focus on each day. The little mantra that keeps coming back to me has been "Go in 100%, without expectations or assumptions". I do have life and teaching goals in mind, but for me right now its about putting myself out there, going in to friendships, teaching events, commitments 100% (if it feels right pf course!), without assumptions or getting caught up in what other people might think of me, what could go wrong, etc. Really, its about being myself and showing up with both my talents and my flaws. We're only 4 days in to 2015, but so far so good! I'll try to keep it up!

Along the lines of teaching events, this Thursday, January 8th I'm traveling to teach again in South Carolina at Greenville, Yoga. Studio owners Liz and Brian and myself were in our first teacher training together with Max Strom, way back when! I'm very much looking forward to seeing them again, working with their students and being in their great space. Fliers are below for both the public workshops and the continued education workshops that I'll be teaching. Private sessions are available. If interested, please let me know by e-mailing me at jamie@jamieelmer.com

Lastly, we have 2 spaces that have opened up for the 2nd retreat week in Mexico at the end of February. In my last few previous posts I've attached the flier for the retreat. If interested, scroll to previous posts and contact Rasa Yoga Center. Its going to be a very special time. Always is!

Be well. Hope to see you soon!
It was formal, in a notebook, a kind of ritual. Well, life changed, and years later, I was out of the habit of this simple, yet great practice. Recently, before getting out of bed each morning, I've started reciting the things I'm grateful for again. Its a potent way to start the day, in the mindset of just how much I have to be grateful for. Tis the season to remember all the good around us. May we keep up this practice and mindset in the new year, too!

Along the lines of gratitude, I'm looking forward to and excited for my 2015 teaching schedule. In the very near future, I'll be teaching classes and workshops in Steamboat Springs, CO, as well as Greenville, SC. Below is information and fliers on my up coming teaching schedule. To see my entire schedule (thus far) for 2015, please visit my "schedule" page.
He's put on just a few more years from when this picture was taken (haven't we all?!), but pretty spry and sounding good none the less!
The days are flying, the nights are flying, and in a week and a half, I'll be flying back to L.A to teach again! The flier for these new workshops is below. With so much yoga being taught these days, its more important than ever to continue learning, grow our skill set, and participate in continued education work. If you have any questions regarding either of these workshops, please contact me directly at jamie@jamieelmer.com

And registration is now open for our 5th Annual Mexico Retreat! Flier is below. This year we have two dates for you to choose from. Each year this retreat becomes more and more special. It is truly a week I look forward to all year. Early registration is necessary as this retreat will fill up. Join us!
This phrase popped in to my head a couple of days ago when I was visiting a great friend of mine, Keri. We both drove over four hours from our new homes (mine in CO, her’s in MT) to meet for a night in Casper, Wyoming. Along the way we hit some “traffic” (see sheep picture below), but made it there in time to spend some quality time together. After all, I had to see her six and a half months pregnant! On my way home, the phrase “Home is where your heart is” kept going through my head. I feel like my heart is in so many places, and with so many people. After the past six years of many moves and much traveling, I feel like I have homes all over this country and that my heart is also at home with so many people I love and care about. Our heart can be in many places at once, and it feels good to have connections with places and people outside of my everyday environment. Seeing Keri, a very important person in my life, reminded me, once again, to let people know more often, how I feel about them, how much I think of them and how much I love them. I feel grateful to have people in my life that I care about so much, and that when I’m with them, even in Casper, Wyoming for just one night, I feel right at home.

Recently, my yoga practice has gone through significant changes. My physical practice used to be filled with “Vinyasas”, strength building poses, and everything that I could possibly think of that was “hard”. Times have changed for me both mentally and physically. My body isn’t the same as it was ten years ago, and my mind and emotions have changed even more. (thank god!) These days, I feel its more important than ever to bring cardio and strength building in to my life, although not through my asana practice, but instead through mountain biking, hiking and outdoor activities. My asana practice is quieter than ever, and that’s hard for me. For so many years, I’ve been drawn towards physical activities that were challenging. The challenge has always made me feel as if I’m being “productive” and really “accomplishing something” (ha!). On the flip side, always practicing in a challenging way is a distraction for what comes up in the quieter times. Recently, I’m craving a quieter practice and meditation. This type of asana practice feels like exactly what I need right now, but does not feel like my nature. What feels “normal” to me, is an internal dialogue like “I’m fine. I can do this. I can handle anything”. This goes along with an asana practice that is based on strength. As time goes on, I realize, I can’t handle anything and everything, and a slower, soften asana practice is showing me that I don’t have to. In the past I felt wimpy and unproductive when I practiced any physical activity that was slower. A softer practice is my daily guide right now in really listening to my instincts, and not simply operating from my usual place of handling everything. We need the gamut when it comes to physical activity, and thankfully, I’m ready to incorporate a softer practice that teaches me more about myself now, and not continue to operate from who I was 15 years ago.

Recently, while teaching in L.A I recorded a couple new short Vinyasa Flow sequences for your at home practice at Yogis Anonymous. Check them out on this link. Breathe, Move, Flow without the vinyasa!
